Step 1: Let’s get started- planning your mural

You might already have an idea of what you want your mural to be but it is always worth taking a look out there and seeing if there are different styles or executions you might like.

Have a search on Google Images, Flickr, Pinterest, catalogs or even the websites of professional mural painter.

Remember a mural is just paint- if you feel you have made a mistake, change your mind or want an update then all it takes is a lick of paint to get back to square one, so don’t be afraid of being bold. Be as big and as bright as you dare!

Painting your own mural is a great way to cheaply update a room, especially if you’ve used more neutral colours for the rest of the decor.

A great way of deciding on what you’d like is taking a photo of your wall and editting your chosen mural image on to the wall in Photoshop or in Aviary’s Phoenix.
This part isn’t crucial to the painting of your mural so don’t worry about it being perfect- it just has to be good enough to give you an idea of what it will look like in your room.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Scale– how big should your mural be?
  • Placement– Are you going to paint one big art piece in the center of your room or many small ones scattered? Is your mural going to span more than one wall or the ceiling too? Remember a mural can completely transform your room, so again, don’t be shy!
  • Color – Do you want it to be bright or subtle? Is the nursery or living room a dark room that needs brightening? How will it match the rest of your furniture/curtains etc?

Our next post will focus a lot more on ideas to get you going!
